My Story

I am moving to Chile. I have spent time setting up contacts and resources to make moving a much simpler task. I purchased a house near Pucon Chile. That is about 400 miles south of Santiago. I have found this is a very popular place both in beauty and peaceful living. I have purchased property and am now selling all my property in the US.
My expense and time that I have encountered after 3 trips to Chile can be greatly reduced, which would save thousands of dollars and months of time for anyone wishing to move to Chile. Which leads up to what I will be doing in Chile. First of which is to help others. My first trips to Chile were with much fear and apprehension.

My discoveries so far are the houses in Chile are for the most part are unacceptable for Americans. The standards of building in Chile are non existing for the most part. Most basic building codes that we expect to find in a house are totally non existing in the locations outside of the cities. I couldn't find anything in the area I wanted to live in, that I could reasonable expect to be standing after 10 years. The structural, electrical, plumbing, and insulation was very poor for the most part. Houses in general were small, even though they had 3 or 4 bedrooms with 900 to 1200 sq ft. of total living space.

I found a American contractor living in the area that was building a house for himself, but was selling his unfinished house along with a 900 sq ft small house on the property. I have upgraded the small house to close to American standards and will add 1000 sq ft to the unfinished house making it 2500+ sq ft. when finished. I expect to have about $200,000.00 US dollars in the property when it is finished. In the US I would expect to pay upwards of $500,000.00 for the same thing. The taxes on the property run about 2 to 3 hundred dollars a year. A lot less than in the US.

For the most part the services such as electric and water are barely exceptable. I have upgraded my water system to adding a storage tank for when the water presure falls too low to be useful. I am going to manufacture Solar and Wind power equipmant to be built by the cheap Chileian labor to be found localy.

I have been looking into the cost of medical insurance in the area. I will update this when I get more answers.

I am now getting my residence papers together so that I can stay in Chile long term and get my personal items brought to Chile without paying the import tax.
